Find your ‘Thing’

For any business, being clear about what sets you apart - your Thing - shapes how customers see you, how you communicate and even the team you build.

It also gives your business a reason to be remembered. And with 95% of your audience not ready to buy right now, being known for what you do best means you’re front of mind when they are.

Our Creative Director, Kingsley, spoke to business leaders from across Luton at a networking event hosted by Keech Hospice. The focus? Finding your Thing.

So, how do you find your ‘Thing’?

We take businesses through four stages to uncover what makes them different and turn that truth into a clear, compelling proposition.

1. Understand the market

First, we look at how competitors position themselves and where your brand fits. By analysing their messaging, campaigns and channels, we identify gaps and opportunities for your business to stand out. We can also build a visual expression of where the competitors are sitting against your brand, so it’s easier to see where the potential lies.

Your Thing doesn’t have to be unique. If you can credibly own it and be the first to claim that space, it can give you a powerful point of difference.

2. Find the truth within your business

This is where we ask the difficult questions. We work with clients to challenge assumptions, unearth what makes their business tick, and offer perspectives they may not have been considered before.

Honest debate is part of the process. There’s a fair bit of friction in our workshops sometimes, but they always lead to a better direction for the brand. Working together, we can expose the issues holding a business back, align teams around the real challenges and identify where sharper positioning can make a difference.

3. Talk to your customers

Your view of the business isn’t always the same as your customers’ view. That’s why we speak to your clients and prospects to understand their needs, challenges and perceptions.

Their feedback can reveal blind spots and uncover what really matters to your audience. This process also highlights where competitors are falling short, and where your brand could find an opening. And it helps you see your business from the outside in and spot opportunities you might otherwise miss.

4. Bring it to life creatively

With strong insights to draw on, we distil what we’ve learnt into a clear, compelling creative expression. Often, that means finding one powerful line that captures your Thing, a single-minded proposition that gives your brand focus and direction.

We’ll explore a few ways to bring it to life, but the strongest idea is usually the one that feels unmistakably right for the business.

There’s one final test: Is it true?

The best positioning always comes from the authentic heart of your brand. Your Thing is already there. Our process helps you discover it, define it and turn it into a powerful reason for customers to choose you.

Want to find your 'Thing'? Let’s talk.
